Shani Dev or Saturn is popularly known as the most malefic of the nine planets. Even a weak presence of Shani in a Birth Chart or a horoscope can be cause for alarm. However, Shani is not an entirely malefic planet. We may sound like a contrarian but this is actually true as we will illustrate in a moment. Having said that, we want to assure you that there is no cause for immediate anxiety. Qualified and experienced astrologers can address the issue constructively because, as angry as Lord Shani may get, he is incredibly easy to please too.

Shani is a potent planetary force that presides over righteousness and unrighteousness in the world. In Vedic Astrology, huge importance is attached to Karma and our deeds in our past lives. Shani presides over our Karma. It punishes bad deeds and rewards good deeds. It is also referred to as the planet of balance and justice. It maintains the precarious balance between good and evil.

Lord Shani is also known to be a good mentor. Legend has it that Lord Shani is quick to punish our bad deeds and through punishment, teaches patience, effort, endeavor and endurance. If misfortune befalls you, it may be a result of your own misdeeds. During not so good times, Shani inspires us to endure the multiple challenges of life, to remain patient during adversity and to continuously endeavor to be good to one and all. This way, Shani motivates us to perform more good deeds in our present lives.

Shani not only punishes but also rewards us for our good deeds which we may have performed in our past lives. A favorable Shani in our birth chart reflects a productive career, a healthy life and many other things positive in nature which we can hope and desire. However, an unfavorable Shani can bring tons of bad luck and misfortune.

Planet Shani takes 30 years to revolve around the Sun. On an average, it spends 2 ½ years in each zodiac sign. Shani’s transit and its revolution around the moon results in a varied impact on each sign. The most feared of Shani’s transit is the Sadhe Sati. This movement of Shani derives its name from the time period of 7 ½ years for which Shani impacts a Chandra Rashi or moon sign. The Sadhe Sati period commences when Shani enters a sign preceding our moon sign and ends when Shani departs from the sign just after our moon sign. Shani takes 2 ½ years to travel in each of the three signs and thus a combined period of 7 ½ years.

Shani Dev subjects us to a series of trials and tribulations to enhance our maturity and to help us learn how to face challenges. Like a parent or teacher, Shani never harms us without a reason or cause. It is our own deeds which invite Shani’s positive or negative influence upon us. Lord Shani presides over darkness and the color associated with him is dark blue. His metal is iron and he governs the gemstone blue sapphire. His element is air and his preferred direction is the west. He rules all the seasons. Many devotees attempt, quite successfully, to appease Lord Shani with offerings of food. Foods associated with Shani include sesame seeds or black gram and mustard oil. He is also associated with the flower violet, perhaps because of its color, and he is the presiding deity of all black animals and trees that are considered unproductive.

If our master astrologer also detects a negative impact, he will work with you closely and recommend specific steps you can and should take to address the situation in a timely manner. Vedic Astrology and Significance of Muhurta

Vedic astrology is recognized universally as one of the most scientific and accurate manifestations of astrological science. The slightest deviation in planetary positions can make a remarkable difference in your life. It can change luck, and lift one from rags to riches. In Vedic astrology, a special branch deals with the determination of auspicious date and time, called 'Muhurta'. In general terms, it is a carefully calculated time span, which is considered auspicious and optimal to perform a specific tangible task.

Vedic astrology is also called a science owing to its intricate relationship with the science of planets and their impact on human life. For instance, the Sun’s radiation has effects on human health and the Moon affects human psychology considerably. Similarly, other planets or heavenly bodies also cast an influence on various aspects of our lives. Many thousands of years ago, ancient Vedic astrologers from India developed a method to calculate a time of day or night that was auspicious and sacred for a specific event, which you wished to perform. Examples of such events include engagement ceremonies, weddings, the launching of a new business and the purchase of a home.

Now that we have introduced you to the concept of Muhurta, let us tell you how it works. Muhurta is a period of two ghatis or forty-eight minutes. A Muhurta comprises the ‘Panchang’, i.e., ‘tithi’ (lunar day), ‘vara’ (weekday), ‘nakshatra’ (constellation), ‘yoga’ (joint motion of the Sun and Moon), and ‘karana’ (half a lunar day). There are different combinations of the five elements of ‘Panchang’ that have auspicious and inauspicious values attached to them. For example, the 4th, 6th, 8th, 12th, 14th and new moon, also called Amavasya, are avoided.

Saturday is equally inauspicious to start something new.

Of the twenty seven ‘Nakshatras’ or constellations, ‘Bharani’ and ‘Kritika’ are considered inauspicious in Vedic astrology when it comes to Muhurta. Of the ‘Yogas’ 6th, 9th, 10th, 17th and 27th are inauspicious and of the ‘Karanas’ ‘Bhadra’ is the most inauspicious.

A qualified Vedic astrologer takes into account all these tangible variables as well as the purpose of the event to calculate the most fruitful ‘Muhurta’. The two heavenly bodies ‘Rahu’ and ‘Ketu’ play a significant role in the determining the Muhurta.

Rahu and Ketu denote the two points where the orbit of the earth around the sun, intersects with the orbit of the moon around the earth. According to Vedic mythology, Rahu was an ‘Asura’ or demon who tricked ‘Devata’s or Gods and drank some of the ‘Amrit’ or divine nectar during the Divine Upheaval also known as ‘Samudra Manthan’. However, the king of Gods, Vishnu, cut his throat before he could swallow the universe. Since he had drunk the divine nectar, his head became immortal. Ketu is the body of Rahu.
